A widely talented list of 23 runners have been nominated for an appearance at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse this weekend, each hoping to find the line in the clear and claim the 2014 Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m).
Producing a keen turn of foot to finish fourth in the featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) last weekend, Akzar has been nominated for a tilt at the 2014 Premier’s Cup.
Undoubtedly hitting career best form over his current preparation, Akzar claimed three victories back-to-back in minor events this year before sprinting well to0 finish just off the pace in second in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) on April 19th.
Overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 16 to win the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) by more than six lengths in his only other appearance prior to last weekend’s Doomben major, trainer Darren Weir is confident the step back in class and step up in distance of the 2014 Premier’s Cup is precisely what is needed for Akzar to return to the winner’s circle.
Also included in nominations for the 2014 Premier’s Cup is well-trialled gelding Precedence.
Trainer by the renowned partnerships of legend Bart Cummings and grandson James, Precedence was a mainstay in major Group 1 events throughout his early racing days, contesting the Melbourne Cup a total of three times most notably.
A typically competitive performer over the spring of 2013, the Zabeel gelding was unlucky to finish second in the Toyota Gold Cup (2046m) on October 6th, but responded in the best way possible in claiming back-to-back victories in the Group 2 International Cup (2500m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).
Finishing third amongst classy company in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) in his only appearance on track this season, the talented eight-year-old is more than a chance of success at Doomben this weekend.
Trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the final field of the 2014 Premier’s Cup, having nominated classy runners Danchai, I’m Imposing, Moriarty, Permit and Secessio for positions in the Group 3’s final field.
Finishing outside the places just once in four appearances on track this time in, Danchai will be aiming to go one better than an impressive run for second in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben last time out on May 10th.
Unlucky to finish just a nose behind fellow Premier’s Cup nominee Zephyron in the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) last time out, I’m Imposing has returned to the track in strong and consistent form this season, having also finished third amongst classy competition in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) first-up on April 5th.
Claiming an impressive career record of 10 wins and 11 places from 42 competitive starts to date, Moriarty produced an impressive turn of foot in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) last weekend; unlucky to finish fifth in a fanning finish for the minor places.
Yet to appear in a competitive event north of the border, Permit has been a noted performer in staying events in his current preparation; winning both the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) and Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) most notably.
Steadily building to the task over just two appearances this time in, Secessio overcame a disappointing run for seventh in the Dunkirk Maiden (1600m) on April 25th with a strong turn of foot to claim third in the Lord Mayor’s Cup last time out.
A final field of 16 plus five emergencies for the 2014 Premier’s Cup is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
