Full Field for 2012 Premier’s Cup

May 23rd, 2012

A full field of 16 horses as well as two emergencies have been named for the Group 3 2012 Premier’s Cup that will test a quality group of stayers over 2200 metres.

Carrying the top weight is Gerald Ryan-trained gelding Ironstein who turned the corner when running second in the Chairman’s Handicap last start after a poor run of form.

The son of Zabeel has drawn the inside barrier and will be out to add a third Group level victory to his resume that stands at eight wins from 38 career outings.

Chairman’s Handicap winner Hume, who produced a remarkable performance to take top honours when paying $51.00, faces a tough ask to record a second straight victory after drawing the outside barrier.

It has been a remarkable effort from the eight-year-old’s trainer Brian Smith who brought him back up to class after not previously tasting victory since June 2009.

In-form mare Dance With Her has drawn barrier two and will be out to record a third consecutive victory after producing some impressive performances of late.

The Al Maher five-year-old finished strongly to win the Listed Warrnambool Cup by a length on May 3 and backed up nine days later to take top honours in the Centaurea Stakes at Morphetville.

With rain predicted for Thursday and Friday, conditions could favour the Mornington-based horse who has an excellent wet-track record.

Also chasing a third straight win and also having good wet-track credentials is John Thompson-trained Shamardashing who has won his last two starts on heavy tracks.

Irish-bred five-year-old Wazn has been building nicely heading into the race, having finished fourth in a quality Rowley Mile field before coming second in the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill.

The Chris Waller-trained horse has solid career record of five wins and five placings from 14 starts and has collected more than $280,000 in prize money.

Bookmaker.com.au will have the Premier’s Cup market open shortly and they are without doubt the best place for online betting.
