2011 Premier’s Cup Form Guide

May 26th, 2011

The 2011 Premier’s Cup will be one of the bets staying races of the Brisbane Carnival fresh off the back of the Doomben Cup last weekend.

The Hombre is the only horse backing up from that race however you could argue that a fair few of these runners would be worthy of a Group 1 start.

Humma comes into this event after winning the major lead up race the Chairman’s Handicap two weeks back.

Also in the field is the second placed Viking Hero, third placed Count Encosta and fourth placed Femina Fashion.

The third and fourth placed horses have an extra 1.5kg each while Viking Hero has 2kgs more and Humma cops an extra 3kgs.

Also shaking things up is the barrier draw with the Humma worst off drawing gate 16 and the only one with a single figure draw being Viking Hero in two.

That could give him the ascendency but remember there’s another 12 horses in the field and a heap of them have credentials.

For that reason check out our 2011 Premier’s Cup Form Guide for yourself and make your selection based on all these factors combined.

2011 Premier’s Cup Form Guide

#1 – Fanjura (Barrier – 1) (58kgs)

  • Trainer: Lee Freedman
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 24s – 6w – 7p
  • Last Start: 9th at Scone

2011 hasn’t been the greatest of years so far for Fanjura but gate one gives him every chance. Got a long way back last start at Scone, expect him to be closer at the turn here.

#2 – Rainbow Styling (Barrier – 15) (58kgs)

  • Trainer: M, W & J Hawkes
  • Jockey: Chris Munce
  • Career Stats: 34s – 7w – 11p
  • Last Start: 8th at Doomben

Top weight and gate 15 have really struck a blow to his chances. Has form around some great horses but hard to see him getting up here.

#3 – Mr Clangtastic (Barrier – 8) (57.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Les Bridge
  • Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
  • Career Stats: 38s – 9w – 10p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Canterbury

Ran second to Shoot Off at Canterbury in the Lord Mayor’s Cup which isn’t bad form. Hasn’t had a win for a long time though, probably only a place hope.

#4 – Tinseltown (Barrier – 5) (57.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Career Stats: 46s – 8w – 8p
  • Last Start: Fell at Randwick

First run since the Sydney Cup where he fell and took down Hawk Island. He was well out of the contest by that stage anyway and he’s not one you could back here at Doomben.

#5 – Humma (Barrier – 16) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Robert Heathcote
  • Jockey: Larry Cassidy
  • Career Stats: 61s – 10w – 20p
  • Last Start: 1st at Doomben

Surprise winner of the Chairman’s Classic at Doomben he probably comes into this race as the favourite. Barrier changes that though and from 16 it’ll be a huge run to win again.

#6 – Femina Fashion (Barrier – 10) (55.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Trevor Whittington
  • Jockey: Glen Colless
  • Career Stats: 27s – 6w – 3p
  • Last Start: 4th at Doomben

Only half a length away in fourth after leading all the way in the Chairman’s. From 10 she may take a sit this time and isn’t without a hope with a win already over 2050m.

#7 – Viking Hero (Barrier – 2) (55.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Career Stats: 19s – 2w – 7p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Doomben

Only edged out by a nose in the Chairman’s and from barrier two he becomes a big player. Interesting to see where he settles, probably somewhere just off the pace.

Bet on Viking Hero now at Luxbet

#8 – Count Encosta (Barrier – 11) (55kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Dwayne Dunn
  • Career Stats: 21s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Doomben

Always tries hard and last start he took a rails run to third. Gate 11 could be good if he finds space but he wouldn’t want to give them too much of a start. Never discount the Count.

#9 – The Hombre (Barrier – 3) (55kgs)

  • Trainer: John Bary
  • Jockey: Jim Byrne
  • Career Stats: 21s – 4w – 8p
  • Last Start: 7th at Doomben

Comes here from the Doomben Cup so drops in class and finds himself in it up to his neck. Expect him to push forward from three and prove hard to catch in the final 400m..

Bet on The Hombre now at Luxbet

#10 – Shuffle The Cash (Barrier – 4) (54kgs)

  • Trainer: Bryan Guy
  • Jockey: Luke Nolen
  • Career Stats: 43s – 9w – 14p
  • Last Start: 7th at Doomben

Had every chance in the Chairman’s and ran on ok from a long way back on the turn. Needs to find a couple of lengths and barrier four will put him closer. Place hope.

#11 – Raeburn (Barrier – 6) (53.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Brian Smith
  • Jockey: Scott Galloway
  • Career Stats: 47s – 8w – 13p
  • Last Start: 11th at Doomben

Finished off 2010 very well but hasn’t been the same horse in 2011. Needs five lengths to be a contender here but he won’t find them, expect big odds.

Bet on Raeburn now at Luxbet

#12 – Saint Encosta (Barrier – 18) (53kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Timothy Bell
  • Career Stats: 22s – 2w – 4p
  • Last Start: 15th at Doomben

Pretty much last all the way in the Chairman’s and worthy of odds around 500 to 1. This is a horse that’s won at stakes level, unless Thompson was playing games he’ll be last again.

Bet on Saint Encosta now at Luxbet

#13 – Little Stranger (Barrier – 14) (53kgs)

  • Trainer: Brian Smith
  • Jockey: Ryan Wiggins
  • Career Stats: 60s – 8w – 20p
  • Last Start: 12th at Doomben

Disappointing last start but the eight year old just found it a little too tough. Gets the same barrier and probably the same result, mid pack finsiher.

Bet on Little Stranger now at Luxbet

#14 – De Fine Lago (Barrier – 17) (53kgs)

  • Trainer: Tony Vasil
  • Jockey: Joe Bowditch
  • Career Stats: 24s – 5w – 8p
  • Last Start: 8th at Warrnambool

Jumping up in class and not bringing a lot of form with him. Any small arguments that may have been on offer were squashed with barrier 17.

Bet on De Fine Lago now at Luxbet

#15 – Warrior Within (Barrier – 7) (53kgs)

  • Trainer: Bruce Hill
  • Jockey: Paul Hammersley
  • Career Stats: 39s – 7w – 7p
  • Last Start: 4th at Gold Coast

The only horse which has had a run after the Chairman’s and he did improve but against lesser company. If he improves again maybe a place but that’s a miracle result.

Bet on Warrior Within now at Luxbet

#16 – American Gangster (Barrier – 9) (53kgs)

  • Trainer: John Holcombe
  • Jockey: Nathan Thomas
  • Career Stats: 28s – 5w – 8p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Sunshine Coast

Decent sort of a horse but not one which you would expect to cause too many problems here. Bottom weight though and gate nine, could run a place if the track is dry.

Bet on American Gangster now at Luxbet

#17 – Streets Away (Barrier – 12) (53kgs)

#18 – Bail Me Out (Barrier – 13) (53kgs)
