On Saturday at Doomben Racecourse, a capacity field of 16 runners plus five emergencies will take to the track in the $125,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup Handicap (2200m) as part of the excellent race card planned for the Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 Day.
The two horses that quinelled the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2020m) a fortnight ago, Crossthestart and Larry’s Never Late, are both backing up in the 2010 Channel Seven Premier’s Cup on Saturday.
Chairman’s Handicap winner five-year-old Cape Cross gelding Crossthestart, who is on his way towards a run in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12, has drawn barrier eight and is due to be ridden by in-form hoop Chris Munce, while fellow Kiwi-bred runner four-year-old Larry’s Never Late has suffered a blow drawing poorly with barrier 20.
Many eyes will also be on 2010 Melbourne Cup hopeful Hissing Sid in barrier seven. The Nash Rawiller mount is looking to move up the order of entry for the 150th Melbourne Cup this November in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival events, starting on Saturday when the five-year-old gelding makes his Queensland debut in the Premier’s Cup.
Other Premier’s Cup runners include New Zealand raiders Sir Slick, the veteran eight-year-old coming off a last start ninth in the Doomben Cup; the in-form Indikator having his first Australian start for 2010; and the Michael Moroney-trained Tinseltown drawn ideally in barrier two.
The emergencies in order are the Bart Cummings-trained Dandaad, Scouting Wide, Albertinelli, Vickezzchardonnay and Zoomin.
The Channel Seven Premier’s Cup is scheduled as race six and is one of three great group races on the programme. The feature event is the $650,000 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) where Ortensia is the $4.20 favourite with SportsBet.
Another thrilling race to bet on at Saturday’s meeting is the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) for three-year-olds.
